Yurt Building Workshops
Building a yurt is an empowering experience and opens many doors for hands-on learning. Our workshops provide a thorough introduction to yurts, and the basics of yurt construction including: coppice as a timber crop, Acadian forest species, making a greenwood working station, using a drawknife and froe, planning and designing your walls, roof, and wheel, and erecting a yurt. Part of our workshops consists of practical issues unique to yurt living, such as heating and insulation. Our workshops are open to all skill levels.

Our residential yurt building workshop occur at our home, however we can take our workshop to you and provide accomidation and meals! Residential centers, community & youth groups are welcome to host our workshops. For more details and costs please view our Yurt Building Workshop Outline .

We started our yurt building workshops in 2006 and since then over one hundred people from all over Canada have participated in our three day intensive yurt building workshops. People with various backgrounds, ages and experience come together to learn about yurt construction, yurt living and have formed a yurt building community to support each other.

A participant from our January 07 workshop created a very through journal of his experiences and posted it online. To gain insight into our yurt building workshops, please visit this link

Yurt Education Experiences

Our yurt education experiences usually occur in a full day hands-on workshop. Participants will broaden their understanding of the structure, history, and cultural background of the yurt – a low impact, sustainable shelter. Through erecting a 200 square foot Mongolian style yurt, we will explore the yurt components and discuss the construction techniques that make these nomadic homes a sustainable shelter. Participants can also build a riving and shaving break, and learn green wood working which could later be applied to any building project. A full day workshop, which can run from 2 - 6 hours, is $250 per day, not including travel.

Building a yurt is an excellent way to bring people together as a team. It enables a group or individual to have ownership over a project and learn the importance of an individual’s worth. The end result is a hand built, creative art piece, a safe space for empowered learning.

We can offer a wide array of workshops depending on your groups needs. Over the past two years we have held many different workshops. Please click here for examples of our yurt education experiences.
