12ft yurt set up in Rose Bay, NS
John Houston
Every yurt we make is custom designed and we take great pride in working with our customers in a personal way. In most cases we prefer to meet with our clients and go through all of the choices and arrive at a yurt that will fit your personal needs. We build in the winter months providing new yurts in the early spring time. All of our yurts include the following:
Wall trellises, spruce or steam bent ash (24ft only), door frame, coppiced maple, ash or birch roof poles, steam bent wheel; tailored yurt canvas including wall sections with rot proof skirt, roof canvas with perimeter rope, tension band, canvas door, tie downs, pegs and eight pointed roof hat with window (color of your choice for roof hat).
We have four common sizes of yurts that we build (12ft, 17ft, 20ft, & 24ft).
Our 17ft yurts are the most popular size as it is easy to maintain, easy to heat and provides enough space for a small family or for cottage use. The tailored yurt canvas includes wall sections with rot proof skirt, roof canvas with perimeter rope, tension band, canvas door, tie downs, pegs and eight pointed roof hat with window (colour of your choice for roof hat).
Welcome to the interior of a Little Foot Yurt! Steam bent clear spruce is used to make the wall trellises, and coppiced maple or ash is used for the roof poles. Each roof pole is cut by hand, drawknifed, tapered, dried, sanded and finished with linseed oil. Take a tour and view all the little details that make our yurts simple, easy to maintain, yet beautiful.
Our windows have a heavy duty clear plastic material with an exterior canvas flap (40"*36")
The Kyrgyz decorative grooving provides extra strength whilst reducing the weight of the frame.
Canvas door attacing to door frame with brass spur grommets.
The eight pointed roof hat has a heavy duty plastic window. The legs of the roof hat have rope tied at the end which then ties around the perimeter rope of the roof cover. The design allows easy removal of the roof hat if you wish to let more air in on a sunny day.
There are many vibrant and neutral colours to choose for your roof hat.
Shown here in our 'business label', the Sunforger canvas we use is tested to the Canadian S109 standards.
Windows add extra light in a yurt and create a lovely cross breeze.
The bottom of the yurt wall is protected by a heavy duty vinyl skirt.
Our flooring is made out of coconut husk (similar to jute) which is soft and rolls out in sections. It has a vapour barrier underneath which stops moisture and humidity coming up from the ground. If you are using your yurt in a temporary manner, then using this flooring is perfect; easy to clean, hard wearing and natural.
High and dry on a deck is always the best way to keep a yurt healthy.
Our 17ft yurt makes a perfect space for story telling and educational purposes.
The yurt can be completely sealed to the deck making it weather proof but also keeping little critters out!
This yurt is set up right on the ground with our coconut husk flooring. A heavy duty tarp and the flooring do not damage the land and the yurt can be easily moved to it's next location.

We provide locally made felt panels which are the traditional felt covering of yurts in Central Asia. Each panel is hemmed with jute edging. Extremely durable and hard wearing they provide a natural, breathable insulation. The felt panels are enclosed by the cotton canvas to protect it from the weather and cuts the draft by making a more comfortable yurt in the colder months.

Off set grommet enforced dowel holes make it easy to join the tipi cover.
